Parking officers get new powers

Officers who monitor parking in Leicestershire have taken up extra powers to deal with problems like graffiti and litter.

Harborough District Council's Civil Enforcement Officers can now issue fines, up to the value of £100, for a range of environmental breaches.

Officials called the move a "natural progression" giving a more efficient and effective service.

The change was approved by district councillors earlier this year.

The seven officers, who wear red uniforms, will continue to enforce parking regulations while giving on-the-spot fines for offences like failing to remove dog mess.

Councillor Janette Ackerley, said: "This is a good example of how working smarter can provide a better service to the residents of the district at no additional cost.

"The officers who already cover the district can enforce other environmental crimes, saving an additional visit by another member of the enforcement team."
