Shops closed as glass panel falls

A number of businesses in a part of Leicester's Highcross shopping centre have been closed after a glass panel fell to the floor.

The eastern section of the centre was closed on Saturday after the incident and centre management said "essential maintenance" was being carried out.

The bigger stores remained open. The western part of the centre and St Peter's Square were also open.

The centre's Tom Nathan said the health and safety of customers was paramount.

Mr Nathan, the general manager, said: "Following on from yesterday's temporary closure of the East Mall section of Highcross, I can confirm that the majority of stores on East Mall will now be closed for Sunday trading while essential maintenance is carried out.

"However, our three anchor stores John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser remain open as does the West Mall and St Peter's Square, Debenhams access is off St Peter's Lane. The entertainment planned for Sunday afternoon will continue as normal.

"The health and safety of our customers is of the utmost importance and we are working hard to rectify the situation and return to full trading as soon as possible.

"We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause."
