Road teams back recycling efforts

A campaign to boost recycling is being backed by highways staff who are reusing road surfaces.

The county council's Recycle Week, which runs from 22 to 28 June, will see a series of roadshows giving advice and ideas of cutting waste.

At the same time, the highways team is reusing 6,000 tonnes of chippings swept up from previous road repair projects.

This saves about £60,000 a year in a £2.3m, 10-year resurfacing programme designed to improve roads.

Matthew Lugg, the county council's Director of Highways and Transportation, said: "Surfacing-dressing is the most cost-effective way of keeping our roads in good condition.

"It costs around 80% less than other surfacing techniques and recycling chippings saves over £60,000 a season.

"The county council actively recycles and minimises waste wherever possible and highways work is no exception."
