Summer drink-drive purge to begin

Motorists across Leicestershire who plan to cool down in June with a cold beer or chilled wine are being targeted by police.

The force's summer anti drink-drive campaign starts on Monday with drivers being warned they could be breath tested and checked for drug use.

Officers urged those having a drink after work or at a barbecue to consider how they would get home.

Last year 1,215 people were breath tested and 94 were over the limit.

Sgt Simon Greensmith said: "We want people to enjoy themselves over the summer months and make the most of the warmer weather.

"However if you're going to a beer garden after work or a friend's barbecue at the weekend then think about how you are going to get home.

"Book a taxi, get a lift with a designated driver or simply don't drink."
