Disappointing drink-drive results

Police in Leicestershire said they were disappointed at the 129 drink-drivers arrested during the Christmas period.

During December, 116 men and 13 women were caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Of those caught, a third were under the age of 25 and all now face a minimum 12-month driving ban and a fine of up to £5,000.

Insp Viv Brenchley said the potential consequences of drink and drug-driving could be fatal.

"I hope these 129 motorists will serve as a warning to others who think that they can drive while under the influence of alcohol and drugs and get away with it.

"Although this was a Christmas campaign, Leicestershire Constabulary's zero tolerance attitude to drink and drug driving runs 365 days a year.

"Officers will continue to stop and breathalyse anyone they believe may be over the legal limit."

During last year's Christmas crackdown, 159 motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
