The Environment Agency believes it has traced the source of pollution which killed dozens of fish at a Leicestershire beauty spot.
Pike and carp suffocated at Groby Pool earlier this month.
Environmental officials believe organic matter such as rotting vegetation, sewage, slurry or even beer was to blame, rather than a toxic substance.
But it has been traced to the Slate Brook which feeds into the west side of Groby Pool.
Environmental officials are still visiting the scene on a daily basis to check the water quality.
Jeff Dolby from the Environment Agency said: "Because we managed to track it back up, this catchment is well above the landfill site and there's no way contamination could have flowed uphill to have flowed down the water course.
"We know it came down the water course so that's where we're continuing our investigations."
