Man arrested over fatal M1 crash

A man has been arrested after two people were killed in a crash on the M1 in the East Midlands.

The victims, a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman from Leicester, were in a car which was in a collision with another car and two lorries.

A 74-year-old Lincolnshire man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving was released on bail.

The southbound carriageway was closed for several hours after the crash near junction 24a on Tuesday afternoon.

Two occupants of a second car sustained minor injuries and were taken to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it should contact Leicestershire Police.

Pc Darren Symes-Goodman said: "At the time of the collision the traffic was either slowing down or stationary due to a previous minor road traffic collision on the carriageway.

"It's important we build up a complete picture of events so if you were also in that queue of traffic following the minor collision, we would like to hear from you."
