Police to tackle car crime surge

Police in Leicestershire are urging drivers to make sure their cars are secure after a surge in vehicle crime.

The latest figures show that over the past 60 days, there have been 43 vehicle crimes in the Castle Donington and Keyworth areas.

Thirty two of the incidents have happened over the past 30 days.

Police staff and community volunteers will man a "beat bus" in Castle Donington on 3 October to offer drivers advice on vehicle safety.

Insp Chris Brown said: "We are seeing an increase in car crime... and in the majority of cases, officers are finding that the owner of the vehicle has left something on display in their car which tempts an opportunist thief to break in and take what they want.

"We are holding the road shows to remind people to think about the security of their vehicle, to take all valuables out of their car and leave it locked."

The most popular items taken from cars include laptops, MP3 players, satellite navigation systems and mobile phones.
