The device can be used in areas where drugs might be taken
Police in Leicester are to use a new portable device to test whether people have been handling drugs.
The Mobile Trace test uses a strip to wipe a surface such as clothing or skin, which is analysed in a machine to give an immediate reading.
It can detect the majority of all illegal drugs including cannabis, cocaine and heroin.
Officers said they were working with bars and pubs over the deployment of the device.
'Quick swipe'
PC Jon Webb, from the City Centre Violence and Disorder Team, said: "We intend to use the machine to test people who we believe may be in possession of drugs in the city.
"A quick swipe of their hands, pockets or bags with the strip is all it takes to confirm whether or not they have been in contact with drugs.
"If the result is positive, then officers can take the appropriate action which may include a more detailed search and arrest."
Paul Draper, from JD Wetherspoon's Last Plantagenet pub on Granby Street, said: "The company takes the issue of drugs very seriously and works hard to ensure that no drugs enter its pubs.
"Any piece of equipment that can help to eradicate drugs can only be welcomed."
