Residents oppose incinerator plan

Residents in a Leicestershire village have formed a campaign group to voice their concerns about plans for a waste incineration site.

People in Ellistown near Coalville have formed an action group to stop the county council turning land it bought in Barndon into a waste facility.

Leicestershire County Council said no decisions had been made and residents would be party to a full consultation.

Under government funding rules, the council must find two possible sites.

Future solutions

County councillor Nicholas Rushton said residents had not been kept in the dark about discussions.

"The council is required to have two sites in its own ownership...to bid for government money [for a waste facility].

"All sites would require planning permission so there will be plenty of opportunities for people to object to whatever site is chosen and the means chosen to treat the waste.

"We all know we cannot keep burying our waste so something has to be done in the future."

A spokeswoman for the action group said: "What our action group wants to get across is that we don't just not want the incinerator on our doorstep, we don't want the incinerator at all. There are better ways to get rid of the waste."
