Two men have been jailed for life for the murder of a Leicester man in India.

Mohan Singh Biring, 59, from Humberstone, was beaten to death with iron bars outside a restaurant in the Punjab in August 2005.

Gurpreet Singh, 24, from Virkan and Jasbir Singh from Moran Wali were found guilty of murder by an Indian Court.

They were also fined 50,000 Rupees (£635). Six other men charged in connection with the murder were found not guilty.

Businessman Mr Biring had been staying in the area for three months while overseeing a housing project.

After the hearing, his son Salinder Singh said: "My father's death has devastated our family and changed our lives forever.

"He was a wonderful man who didn't deserve to die in this horrific way and I still miss him every minute of every day."

Supt Steve Harrod from Leicestershire Police said: "I am pleased that after three years and a very lengthy trial, these two men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the role they played in the murder of Mr Biring.

"His family have understandably been devastated by his death but I hope that this outcome will bring them some form of comfort."
