Cash for county flood prevention

Leicestershire County Council will spend £500,000 on improvements to its flood prevention schemes.

Road drainage work is planned for Blackfordby, Market Harborough, Syston, Cranoe, Burton Overy, Smeeton Westerby, Congerstone, and on the A47 and A511.

A study has also started on how to improve access across the Soar Valley during flooding.

County Councillor Nicholas Rushton said steps need to be taken now to protect homes and roads during heavy rains.

"This money is being spent on extensive research which will enable us to determine the most effective way of tackling flooding in Leicestershire," said Mr Rushton.

"We are aiming to minimise the risk of widespread flooding previously experienced in other parts of the country."
