About 50,000 beer mats are being handed out in pubs, bars and clubs in Leicestershire to raise awareness of alcohol abuse and domestic violence.

A week-long campaign is being run from 18 to 25 August by Leicestershire County Council.

The aim is to reach perpetrators and victims of violence by tackling the issue of alcohol misuse.

Byron Rhodes, from the council, said: "Alcohol should not be used as an excuse for physical abuse."
