Motorists are being warned to cut their speed through a Leicestershire village after a survey found some cars going at almost twice the limit.
Officials planning a children's play area in Spring Cottage asked police to check local traffic speeds.
They were alarmed to find many vehicles, including lorries, far exceeding the 30mph (46km/h) limit.
Now extra signs and patrols have been deployed and if there is no change, permanent measures may be installed.
Potential fatality
Ashby Woulds Town Council said the 30mph limit on Spring Cottage Road reflected the fact it ran through the middle of the village.
Following the survey the authorities set up a mobile community speeding device which measures the speed of vehicles and flashes it up on a roadside screen.
Police motorcyclists have also been out regularly checking for speeding motorists and a number of Fixed Penalty Notices and Advice Notices have been issued.
Pc Joy Sweet, the Neighbourhood Beat Officer, said: "I am working with Ashby Woulds Town Council to look at some longer term measures to tackle the problem such as permanent traffic calming measures and speed flashing signs.
"But in the meantime I would urge motorists driving through Spring Cottage to slow down and think how awful it would be if they killed someone - either themselves or someone else."
