Council clamp down on city flyers

Council bosses are clamping down on the amount of flyers given out in Leicester city centre in a bid to cut waste.

Firms who want to distribute the adverts will soon need to apply for a licence as part of new proposals by the city council.

Councillor Robert Wann said thousands of leaflets were dropped over the weekends which then have to be picked up by the authority.

He said the licence fees would go towards clean-up costs.

Councillor Wann said: "We're spending millions of pounds regenerating the city to make it a cleaner and more environmentally friendly place to live.

"If you want to give flyers out or advertise, then use the proper methods.

"It's not a carte blanche ban across the city but what we're saying is be sensible about it."

He said the new proposals had been passed by the council's cabinet and should be imposed within the next couple of months.
