Licences review after drink sting

Two off-licences and a public house in Leicester are to have their licences reviewed after failing underage drink checks by police.

Test purchase operations were carried out at 15 off-licences and seven pubs in the city on Good Friday.

Volunteers aged 14 and 15 were served alcohol by staff in the three premises.

Police said it was the second time that the firms had failed an underage drink check. Employees who sold the alcohol were issued with an £80 fine.

Pc Jon Webb said: "This is a very disappointing result.

"Police in Leicester are working hard to prevent underage drinking and associated issues of anti-social behaviour, which can have such a detrimental impact on communities.

"I hope that this latest test purchase operation will remind all licensees that the sale of alcohol to under-18s will not be tolerated and we will continue to carry out checks on a regular basis."
