Parents campaign for law change

The parents of a 12-year-old Leicester boy killed by a speeding motorist have said they will not rest until there has been a change in the law.

Callum Deacon died in June 2004, when he was hit by a motorcycle whilst playing with friends.

Mandy and Ivan Deacon of Marriott Road have now backed a government bill which would create a new offence of causing death by careless driving.

The offence would see those found guilty punished with imprisonment.

Penalty points

Steven Chevin, from Ratby in Leicestershire, was found not guilty of death by dangerous driving in a court hearing at Leicester Crown Court on 13 February.

He was fined £2,000 and given four penalty points. The accident happened on Asquith Way in Leicester in June 2004 when 12-year-old Callum was crossing the road.

The couple said they launched their campaign in memory of Callum not for vengeance but to get a sense of justice.

Mrs Deacon said: "Everybody's unpredictable but people need to know that if they do something wrong through something they've done, then they have to be punished for it."
