Building work starts at college
Building work has begun on a controversial Christian school due to open in 18 months in Leicester.

The city academy in Eyres Monsell is jointly sponsored by the Church of England and a local businessman.

But it has been criticised for being outside the control of the local authority and not having to follow the national curriculum.

Academies typically cost up to £20m, with private sponsors raising £2m and the government providing the rest.

Bishop of Leicester Tim Stephens believes opinion is changing.

He said: "We have appointed a head teacher and I believe we have the overwhelming support of the community and the parents.

"I think in 18 months' time we will see lots of people pulling together to make this what everybody wants it to be - a really good opportunity for the children of the area."
