Mohan Singh
Mr Singh was killed outside a restaurant in the Punjab
Eight people have been arrested in India over the death of a man from Leicester, it has been revealed.

Mohan Singh, 59, a father-of-two was beaten to death with metal poles outside a restaurant in Phagawarat in August 2005.

Police are now looking for a ninth man believed to be involved.

The investigation was stepped up after a visit to the region by Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, who was informed of the arrests by the British High Commission.

Senior officials

Police officers in India said a close watch was being maintained of all bus stops, railway stations and the international airport at Amritsar City.

Two weeks ago Mr Vaz travelled to India to meet with senior government officials to try and speed up the investigation into Mr Singh's death.

He travelled to the Punjab and met with the Indian Home Secretary in New Delhi to discuss the case.

Mr Singh bought land in Phagawara and had been in India for three months overseeing its development as a housing complex.

Mr Singh's brother, Tirath Biring, who is a councillor in Oadby and Wigston, flew out to meet the police and government officials with Mr Vaz.

The eight suspects were arrested in the past two weeks.
