Mothers who drape handbags over pushcairs are targetted
Shoppers are to be given bells to attach to purses and handbags in a bid to deter thieves.

The initiative is being launched in Market Harborough, Leics, in the run-up to the Christmas shopping period.

Leicestershire Police hope the bells will help to alert people if their purses, wallets or handbags are moved while they are shopping.

Posters will also appear across the town reminding shoppers to keep their purses safe.

Mothers targeted

Pc Pete Starbuck said: "We are keen to make sure that shoppers can enjoy their shopping without the misery of having their purse stolen.

"The bells are a warning to purse-snatchers not to come to Market Harborough.

"Thieves often target mothers who are pushing their children in buggies and who may have their handbags draped over the side."

The scheme is being launched by the police in conjunction with Harborough Against Retail Theft (HART) and the Harborough Community Safety Partnership.
