Abandoned dog 'saves pet's life'
Lisa Smith and Nigel
Staff say without Nigel's help the other dog would have died
An unwanted dog at Leicester's RSPCA Centre has saved the life of a much-loved pet in the city.

Nigel the six-year-old lurcher was abandoned at the centre six months ago.

But now he has become a hero after donating blood to a cocker spaniel called Jack who needed urgent, life-saving treatment.

RSPCA staff said Jack's owners cannot thank Nigel enough and both dogs are now being treated to lots of extra care and attention.

'Truly pampered'

Jack was brought to the RSPCA as an emergency case by a local vet.

In the short time they had, staff at the centre decided Jack was the only dog large enough to be able to give enough blood.

Lisa Smith from the RSPCA said: "He was as good as gold and didn't make any fuss while all this was going on.

"The owners are absolutely delighted, they have been up to meet Nigel and they have brought him lots of treats and sacks of food, so he's getting well and truly pampered."

RSPCA staff added they are continuing their search for a suitable permanent home for Nigel.
