Jail term for hit-and-run driver
A hit-and-run driver who killed a father has been jailed for seven years.

Anil Farma, 23, had no driving licence when his BMW ploughed into pedestrian Paul Andrew Lee on a bus lane in Leicester on 25 May.

Leicester Crown Court heard how witnesses saw Farma's car hit Mr Lee as he crossed Welford Road.

Farma, of Mayflower Road, Evington, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at the hearing on Thursday.

10-year ban

The impact threw the 37-year-old BT engineer into the air and he died at the scene.

Farma handed himself into police less than an hour later, the court was told.

One witness was the victim's father-in-law, Norman Robinson, who saw the collision as he queued in traffic.

Judge Peter De Mille jailed Farma for six years for the driving charge and then imposed a further 12 months for an unrelated dishonesty offence.

Banning him from the roads for 10 years, he said no sentence could replace the loss felt by Mr Lee's family or "cure the anguish they must feel".

Speaking after the sentencing, Mr Lee's brother Mark said he was pleased with Farma's jail term but added: "It's not going to bring Paul back."
