Girl, 10, abducted by sex attacker in Fleetwood

A 10-year-old girl has been abducted and sexually assaulted after she left a sweet shop in Lancashire.

The girl was forced into a car by a man who grabbed her as she left the Fleetwood shop alone on Sunday at about 1315 BST, Lancashire Police said.

She was taken to land on Rossall Lane and subjected to a serious sexual assault.

After the attack, the girl ran across two nearby fields and told a passer-by what had happened, who called police.

She had earlier been playing close to Martindale Avenue, where detectives believe the attacker had parked his car.

Det Ch Insp Neil Esseen said the girl was being comforted by her parents and a team of specially-trained officers were interviewing her.

'Truly sickening'

He added: "She has been through a very traumatic ordeal and we are giving her all the help and support she needs.

"This is a truly sickening attack on such a young and defenceless girl and I am appealing for anyone with information to contact us.

Ch Insp Tracie O'Gara said those sorts of incidents were "extremely rare" and police patrols had been increased in the area.

She added: "I would ask that parents remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to police."

The man is described as white, aged between 20 and 50 and had very short hair.

It is thought he was wearing blue jeans and a blue T-shirt.

The car has been described as dark coloured, possibly green.
