Canal death victim 'a family man'

A 56-year-old man believed to have been murdered on a narrowboat on Lancaster Canal was a "loving family man", his wife has said.

Emergency services were called by a man reporting an assault on a canal towpath at Garstang on Wednesday night.

David Tweddle, from Carlisle, was found collapsed on the vessel and later pronounced dead at the scene.

A 72-year-old man is being questioned by police on suspicion of murder. Investigations are continuing.

The victim's wife, 57-year-old Agnes Tweddle, released a statement through Lancashire Police on Thursday night.

"David worked for age concern and was a loving family man," said Mrs Tweddle.

"He loved his boat and and would live for his weekends when he could go sailing. This was his life."
