New wetlands home for otter pair

Asian Short-Clawed Otter
The Asian short-clawed otter is the least aquatic of all otters

A pair of Asian short-clawed otters have become the latest attraction at Lancashire's Martin Mere wildlife and wetlands centre.

The breed is under threat because of the destruction of its natural habitat.

They are the least aquatic of all the 13 species of otter and the enclosure has been designed to only allow areas of shallow water.

The animals were introduced to Martin Mere after being acquired from nature centres in Birmingham and Weymouth.

They have a very fast metabolism, meaning they will need to be fed often but in small amounts.
