Popemobile pull at transport show

A Popemobile pull was one of the main attractions as thousands of people descended on Leyland for its annual transport festival.

Visitors flocked to the Lancashire town on Saturday for a procession of about 80 classic vehicles.

On Sunday, teams were pulling the 10-tonne vehicle made by Leyland Trucks for John Paul II's visit to the North West of England in 1982.

The festival is an annual celebration of Leyland's vehicle heritage.

Organiser Martin Ainscough said the festival was a great way to promote the town's history.

"It's part of some bigger plans we've got for the future," he said.

"We are trying to organise regeneration in Leyland and put it back in its place at the top of the tree when it comes to being known as a world heritage site for commercial vehicles."

Money raised by the festival will go towards St Catherine's Hospice, Sue Ryder Care and the British Commercial Vehicle Museum.
