A police officer was gunned down without warning as she confronted a masked raider outside a Lancashire pub, a court has been told.

Pc Katie Johnson, 29, said she felt "excruciating pain" after she was shot in the leg, Preston Crown Court heard.

She came face-to-face with one of two robbers who had tied up four staff at the Hospital Inn in Bamber Bridge on New Year's Eve 2007, the jury heard.

Two men, aged 39 and 47, have denied attempted murder.

The men were attempting to make off with more than 12,000, the court heard.

Pc Johnson, a dog handler, said she saw a "big, broad" man wearing a balaclava at the doorway of the pub shortly after she arrived at the scene of the raid.

Dog 'didn't respond'

"He looked directly at me," she told the jury. "He shouted at me to get to the ground as I shouted at him to stay where he was."

Anthony Cross QC, prosecuting, asked her: "What did he do?"

She replied: "He produced a firearm and shot me. I had no warning."

Pc Johnson said the man held the gun at shoulder height and pointed it straight at her, before shooting her in the thigh.

Her police dog, Chaos, started to bark and screech, she told the jury, and she ordered him to go after the offender.

However, the dog did not respond and the masked man went back inside the pub, she said.

David Tyrell, 39, of Lions Drive, Swinton, and Wayne McDonald, 47, of no fixed address, deny attempted murder.

They also deny wounding with intent. David Tyrell pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm.

Mr McDonald denies robbery along with Rudolph Mancini, 55, of Division Lane, Blackpool, and Peter Plaskowski, 28, of Dean Street, Bamber Bridge.

Mr McDonald has also pleaded not guilty to possessing a sawn-off shotgun and a pistol.

The case continues.
