Locals needed for tram festival

The event is one of the largest free festivals in north-west England

A Lancashire festival which attracts thousands of people needs more local volunteers to come forward.

The July Fleetwood Transport Festival, or Tram Sunday, is worth about £500,000 to the area, but a lack of helpers threatened its future.

It was saved late last year, but more support is needed, organisers say.

The festival, which has been running for more than 20 years, sees vintage trams using the town's lines. There are also military displays and stalls.

Much work

David Hutton, life president of the festival committee, said: "We still need more locals to get involved as the majority of people are from outside the area.

"Many don't appreciate how much work goes on behind the scenes even at this early stage.

"We need people to deal with the transport vehicles, others to look after the various stalls and amusements.

"The more help we can get, the better we can make this year's festival."

A public meeting to assign specific roles will be held at 1900 GMT at the North Euston Hotel.
