A review of Blackpool's masterplan has been ordered by the town's latest regeneration chief.

Sir Howard Bernstein, who was appointed chairman of ReBlackpool in July, wants to set clear investment priorities for the urban regeneration company.

The strategic review was revealed in a report commissioned by the government task force set up in the wake of Blackpool's failed casino bid.

The report was to measure the progress of Blackpool's regeneration masterplan.

As with any long-term plan, it is essential to review activity and our goals to make sure what we planned to deliver is still feasible and relevant
Doug Garrett, chief executive of ReBlackpool

Liz Meek, who wrote the report, said Sir Howard's review would look at all activity under way in Blackpool and "set a clear direction for investment prioritisation".

Blackpool's masterplan was launched in 2003 with the aim of transforming the resort through development and the rebuilding of the seafront.

Mrs Meek said progress had been made in a number of areas since the task force's first report in July.

These include discussions about the creation of a theatre museum, 4m secured towards the Tower Headland performance space, new housing schemes and the expansion of Blackpool and Fylde colleges.

Doug Garrett, chief executive of ReBlackpool, said: "As with any long-term plan, it is essential to review activity and our goals to make sure what we planned to deliver is still feasible and relevant.

"Sir Howard has a proven record in delivering major regeneration projects and his skills and experience will now be used to lead and push forward development in Blackpool."
