Naked chimney man denies burglary

A naked man found wedged in the chimney of a supermarket has denied trying to burgle the store, a court heard.

Daniel Davies, 20, was found by police who heard cries for help coming from the chimney breast of the Tesco Express in Pemberton, Wigan, on Wednesday.

They called fire crews, who dismantled the structure to find the 20-year-old inside, Wigan magistrates heard.

Mr Davies, of Smethurst Lane, Wigan, pleaded not guilty to attempted burglary and was remanded in custody.

Jury trial

Rupert Davies, prosecuting, told the court that police were alerted to the converted Victorian terrace at 0530 BST.

Andrew Stock, for the defendant, said his client denied trying to steal anything from the shop.

Dennis Dunn, chairman of the bench, remanded Davies into custody until 29 October.

The case will be committed to Liverpool Crown Court for trial by jury.
