City regeneration talks under way

Controversial plans to revamp the centre of Lancaster as part of a multi-million pound regeneration scheme are being discussed by councillors.

The £100m plans, if passed, would see up to 180 new homes built, as well as a department store, shops and car parks.

Supporters believe it will help the city compete as a shopping destination.

However, opponents claim the plans for the canal corridor will destroy the area's character, create excess traffic and force existing shops to shut.

Plans for the scheme went on display in the city in July after the original proposals from developers were revised following objections from the public.

People in Lancaster organised a carnival in protest against the plans in March.

The revised plans feature more green space and houses, and the dimensions of proposed buildings and office blocks are smaller.

The two-day meeting, which continues on Tuesday, is being held at Lancaster Town Hall.
