Dog walker hit by motorcycle dies

A 58-year-old man out walking his dog near Blackpool seafront died after being struck by a motorcycle.

Derek Atherton was crossing south promenade, near the junction with Crystal Road, when the accident happened on Friday night.

He suffered leg, body and head injuries and was taken by ambulance to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, but died later.

The biker was also taken to hospital although his injuries were less severe, a police spokesman said.

The accident happened at about 2005 BST while there were lots of people in the area for the illuminations.

Although some witnesses have come forward, police have urged anyone else who saw the crash to get in touch.
