Irish boy band Boyzone are to join the stars of BBC's Top Gear for this year's Blackpool illuminations switch on.

UK band Scouting for Girls will also take to the stage as Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May flick the switch on 29 August.

Thousands of tourists are set to visit the town to see the six-mile stretch of illuminations along the promenade.

The switch-on will coincide with a free concert and will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2.

This year's illuminations will include new designs for the second year running from Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

The illuminations will shine for 66 nights until 2 November 2008.
