Police say an 81-year-old man held over the death of his wife at their home in Lancashire is still being assessed under the Mental Health Act.

Anne Sutton, 71, was found strangled at the home she shared with her husband Jack, in the Tarleton area of Preston, on Tuesday morning.

Local minister, the Reverend Kevin Jones, said the couple had been married for 48 years and had three children.

Mr Sutton could be assessed for up to 28 days under Section 2 of the act.

Mrs Sutton, who was a life member of Hesketh Lane Methodist Church, was described by Rev Jones as a "gentle, kind woman".

"Anne was a gentle, kind and genuinely welcoming woman, with a quiet nature and a warm smile," he said.

"She had a strong Christian faith and raised her family in the church just yards from their door.

"Her gentleness was evident to all and she was the kind of person it was a pleasure to be with."
