Husband, 81, held after wife dies

An 81-year-old man is being questioned over the death of his 71-year-old wife, police have said.

Police were called to the couple's address in the Tarleton area of Preston, Lancashire, on Tuesday.

Anne Sutton was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination revealed she died from strangulation.

Her husband was arrested at their home in Hesketh Lane and is being assessed under the Mental Health Act, Lancashire Police said.

A police spokeswoman said: "On arrival at the house officers discovered a 71-year-old woman who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

"The death is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is under way.

"An 81-year-old man from Tarleton was arrested and is being questioned over the death of his wife."
