Police appeal over crossing crash

Police are appealing for witnesses to a crash in which a car hit a level crossing, leaving a man in his 70s seriously ill in hospital.

The accident happened on Saturday at the junction of Plimlico Road and Plimlico Link Road in Clitheroe.

A Nissan Micra was in collision with a Land Rover Discovery - the Micra then hit the level crossing lights.

The elderly man suffered serious injuries in the crash and had to be cut free by firefighters.

Sgt Pete Sculpher, of Lancashire Police, said: "I would appeal for anyone who saw the incident to contact us.

"At the moment we are still trying to establish exactly what happened."

The road was closed for more than three hours.
