Woman dies in M6 motorway pile-up

A woman has died and two people have been seriously injured in a pile-up on the M6 motorway in Lancashire.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway between junctions 32 at Broughton and 33 at Galgate in the early hours.

Police said at least four vehicles were involved including a van, a lorry and two cars.

The northbound carriageway was closed while the scene was examined and cleared. One lane remains shut.

The female driver of a Ford Escort was declared dead at the scene.

Her female passenger suffered serious injuries.

A man driving a Vauxhall Astra was also seriously injured.

A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said a full investigation was under way and any witnesses were asked to contact police.
