New honour for ex-rugby captain

Bill Beaumont led England to the Grand Slam in 1980

Former England rugby captain Bill Beaumont, who was born in Chorley, Lancashire, has been appointed a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Beaumont, who was appointed an OBE in 1982, led his team to the Five Nations Grand Slam in 1980.

The 56-year-old's CBE is in recognition of his services to rugby and charity.

Sylvia Walby, Professor of Sociology at Lancaster University, is to be appointed an OBE for services to equal opportunities and diversity.

Services to medicine

Professor Romesh Chand Gupta, consultant physician and hospital lead for stroke services at Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is also to be appointed an OBE in the honours list - for services to medicine and to the Lancashire community.

Among the people from Lancashire to be appointed MBEs are Peter Cousins, from Ormskirk, for services to people with disabilities in West Lancashire and Michael Charles Damms, chief executive of East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce for services to businesses in the north west of England.

Neil Froggett, day centre officer at Blackpool's Langdale Centre, is also to be appointed an MBE for services to local government and the voluntary sector.

School caretaker and dinner lady Bridget Harrington, from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary School in Blackburn, is to be appointed an MBE in the birthday honours list for her services to education and the local community.
