A Taser gun was used by police in Lancashire to help them restrain a man who was threatening hospital staff with a syringe.
Police said the man was threatening to harm himself and staff in the accident and emergency unit at the Royal Preston Hospital late on Tuesday night.
The Taser gun, which temporarily immobilises suspects, was used when attempts to calm him down failed.
A 37-year-old man was arrested on a public order offence.
He is due to be questioned by officers.
Lancashire police said the man recovered quickly from the effects of the gun.
