Rapist attacks schoolboy in woods

A 12-year-old boy was raped in what police say was a "brutal" sex attack by a man who asked the child to help him look for his lost dog.

The attacker approached the boy on Wednesday evening in the Suddellside area of Darwen, Lancashire, and offered him money to help him search.

The boy was led to a wooded area in Marsh House where he was attacked.

Lancashire police have arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of rape. He is due to be questioned by officers.

Stopped car

A police spokeswoman said: "The boy tried to leave but has then been subjected to a brutal sexual attack.

"The attack may have lasted for some time but at this stage it is unclear how long."

The child flagged down a passing car, who took him home and police were called.

Lancashire police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and want to speak to anyone who believe they may have been approached by the attacker.
