Jobs threat at city bakery site

Bakery staff are entering consultations with managers

Up to 150 jobs are under threat at a bakery in north Liverpool.

Bosses at Sayers in Norris Green have announced they have entered talks with unions over possible redundancies at the Lorenzo Drive site.

They said it was part of an operational review due to a "worldwide escalation" in the cost of raw materials, energy and fuel.

More than 200 people are employed at the site. The firm said redundancies would not affect its shops.

Managers have now entered into a 90 day period of consultation with unions and staff over the proposals.

Unions said they were now waiting to sit down with managers to examine proposals.

Bakery bosses said they had been trying to turn around the financial performance of the business for a number of years.

They said certain parts of the business would be put at risk without any action because of the current economic climate.

A spokesperson for Sayers said: "I must stress that this review is taking place at an operational level focusing on our supply chain which is separate to our retail shops.

"These will continue to give our customers the same great products, service and value for money that we have always offered."

Sayers is owned by the Lyndale Food group, which also runs the Hampsons chain.
