Referendum plan on pool closure

The council said the pool was not making enough money

Residents of a Lancashire coastal town are to get a chance to have their say on plans to close a swimming pool.

Fylde Borough Council decided to close St Annes Baths as part of a package of cost-cutting measures earlier in March.

Protests were organised by users of the pool when the proposal was made public, and now St Annes Town Council is holding a referendum on the issue.

It is not clear what effect the vote, dubbed the "pool poll", will have on the borough council's decision.

Everyone living within the town's boundary will be allowed to vote in the referendum, which takes place in a few weeks.

St Annes baths, which is situated at the end of the promenade, is due to close at the end of July.
