Resort bans 'lewd' items for sale

Traders at a Lancashire resort are being advised to stop selling "lewd" items or face prosecution and having their goods confiscated.

It is hoped the warning, from police and local council, will help Blackpool to clean up its image.

The resort is a popular destination for stag and hen parties and has led to some traders on the promenade selling "lewd inflatable novelty goods".

The enforcement action will come into place in the new year.

'Blow-up doll'

It is illegal for items such as blow-up dolls, inflatable genitalia and some sex aids to be on display where minors can see them.

In the past, Blackpool Council has turned a blind eye but now it will enforce the legislation which bans these items from being sold in unregistered venues.

Peter Callow, leader of Blackpool Council, said: "We've all seen blow-up dolls and other vulgar items for sale on the promenade. Although it may appear as a bit of harmless fun for many it can be deemed offensive.

"Sex-related articles, such as lewd inflatable novelty goods, are not acceptable and are not something children should be exposed to.

"We are warning traders now, before they order their stock for next season, that we have the powers to remove any inappropriate items and we will definitely be using this legislation.

'Clean up act'

"This is just one of a number of enforcement actions we will take to ensure that everyone who comes to Blackpool enjoys themselves without the behaviour of the small minority ruining it for them."

Traders selling "lewd" items can expect the goods to be seized and individuals or traders reported for prosecution.

Inspector Keith Ogle said: "Here in Blackpool selling this type of merchandise, has to some extent, been commonplace in the past.

"However, what is clear is that we need to clean up our act, not only in terms of making Blackpool a safe place to visit, but also by making it a desirable place to bring up your family.

"Whilst we want people to come and enjoy themselves, there are certain standards that we, as a resort town, should aim for and one of them is to make our town visually appealing to families, as well as to the younger visitors who come to enjoy the nightlife."
