A teacher accused of having an affair with a sixth-former and offering to supply her with cocaine has gone on trial at Preston Crown Court.

Andrew Riley, 36, of Wentworth Drive, Lancaster, was former head of sixth form at Baines High School in Poulton.

The court heard he had an affair with one of his 17-year-old pupils who was "infatuated" with him.

He denies abuse of trust and sexual activity with a child and offering to supply cocaine.

The court was told how Mr Riley, who was then aged 34, twice took the girl to hotels in Manchester.

'Explicit messages'

After drinking champagne he allegedly offered her cocaine before they had sex.

The jury was told he spent £200 on cocaine, telling his pupil it helped him have better sex.

Dennis Watson, prosecuting, told the jury the girl was infatuated and "worshipped" her teacher.

He said the pair shared sexual fantasies and swapped internet and phone texts and explicit video messages. He took the jury through more than 400 pages of Yahoo Instant Messages recovered from the girl's computer.

The court heard how after the girl went away to study at Oxford the relationship "cooled" and she eventually confronted her old school with the e-mail messages.

The police were then called in.

The trial continues.
