Two teenagers have admitted beating a 51-year-old man to death as he visited an off-licence in Lancashire.
David Woods was attacked near the 53 Degree club at the University of Central Lancashire in October 2006.
At Preston Crown Court, a 17-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age, admitted the manslaughter Mr Woods.
His co-accused, Denham Yates, 18, of Lawson Street, Preston, has pleaded guilty to murder. Both teenagers will be sentenced on Monday.
Unprovoked
Mr Woods, who lived on nearby Moor Lane, was "innocent victim who was in the wrong place at the wrong time", Det Supt Graham Gardner said.
"These two young men killed David Woods in a violent attack virtually on the doorstep of his own home," he added.
"It was a random, meaningless, and unprovoked attack that robbed a decent family of a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
"They picked him out simply because he was there and they carried out a ferocious attack for the sake of it."
