A 1960s Morris Minor is being used by police to slow down speeding motorists.

Old Bill, owned by a former police officer, is being parked up in the Lancashire village of Singleton to promote the "30mph or less" message.

It is hoped that it will catch the attention of passing motorists, making them slow down.

The Morris Minor 1000, which is no longer used to chase criminals, is the oldest police car on active duty in the UK, Lancashire Police said.

Old Bill's owner Will Hull was a police officer for 15 years and now helps promote road safety messages as a police community volunteer.

The classic car is also a regular visitor to primary schools to educate the next generation of drivers.

Mr Hull said: "I have more than 40 years experience with classic cars and when I came back as a police community volunteer, it seemed an ideal opportunity to promote the road safety message in our communities.

"It's amazing the effect seeing the car has on drivers and even those that aren't speeding slow down to have a look.

"It's all about prevention rather than cure."
