A programme designed to help diabetes sufferers manage their condition better is being previewed on Monday.
X-PERT is a new patient education scheme launched by Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Primary Care Trust.
Dr Trudi Deakin, a research dietician, has pioneered the programme which uses visual aids in a six-week course.
The main speaker at the preview, at Burnley Football Club, will be Dr David Colin-Thome, the National Clinical Director For Primary Care.
Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Primary Care Trust said the programme explored diabetes issues to increase patient knowledge, confidence and skills.
Improved control
The aim is for patients to be able to make informed decisions regarding self-management of their diabetes.
It said that a randomised, controlled trial involving 314 participants carried out from 2000-2004 by Dr Deakin showed improved diabetes control.
The scheme also reduced demand for diabetes medication, increased physical activity and improved diet among X-PERT participants, said the trust.
Dr Deakin's work has won several national awards, including the Secretary of State's Award for Excellence in Healthcare Management.
Following the national preview on Monday, the X-PERT programme will become available to all NHS Acute and Primary Care Trusts.
