'Bad smell' plant is to shut down
A controversial animal rendering plant in Lancashire is to close.

The Fats and Proteins (UK) Ltd site at Nightingale Hall Farm in Lancaster has been out of operation since it was badly damaged by fire in October 2005.

Residents had complained about the smells coming from the plant on Quernmore Road for several years.

Glenfarm Holdings, which owns Nightingale Hall, said the closure was likely to result in job losses among the 35-strong workforce.

In a statement, the company said the decision to close the site was down to the fire damage and the way the UK industry now operates.

In 2003, the firm failed in an appeal against an order for it to stop odours going beyond the plant's boundaries.

The following year, Lancaster City Council took the company to court over claims about smells from the site during the foot and mouth crisis but lost the case.

Glenfarm Holdings said it would now consider the options of what to do with the Lancaster site.
