Cigarette haul seized from ice-cream van in Ashford

A large quantity of cigarettes and illegal substances were seized after police searched an ice-cream van.

The vehicle was stopped in Flaxpond Road, Ashford, Kent, following complaints from the local community.

A search of the driver's house further revealed a large quantity of rolling tobacco and cigarettes.

The case has been passed to customs officers who said the cigarettes were thought to have been smuggled, with the duty evaded estimated at about £4,500.

They said in total 16,430 cigarettes and 10.45 kilos of hand rolling tobacco had been seized.

No arrests were made, but the ice-cream van was impounded.
