The body of a woman has been found at a flat in Kent, following a stand-off at a supermarket in which police marksmen shot a 32-year-old man in the arm.

Officers went to the Ambassador Guest House, in Victoria Road, Canterbury, in the early hours, after the shooting at Morrisons in Wincheap in the city.

Police are waiting to question the man, named locally as Tomas Uptas, who is in hospital with a bullet wound.

Police said his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Armed officers were called to Morrisons after witnesses reported a man brandishing a firearm inside the store on Thursday evening.

No-one else was injured during the incident.

Police said the weapon was "a Power Line 15XTCO2 BB hand gun" and had been recovered from the supermarket.

Cleaner Pamela Elvidge, 56, who was shopping in the store, said she saw a man who appeared to be carrying a handgun in the beer and wine aisle.

'Almighty gunshot'

She said: "We went to pay for our shopping and then went to the cigarette aisle.

"Then there was this almighty gunshot sound and the staff all told us to get out of the shop.

"There were about 50 to 60 people in there at the time, not many, which was just as well really as it was a pretty frightening experience to go through.

Scene of Morrisons shooting

"I heard just the one shot but it was quite loud. We all went out into the car park but we couldn't leave.

"As we waited, we saw someone being brought out on a stretcher."

The death of the woman is being treated as suspicious and police are carrying out a forensic examination of the flat in Victoria Road.

Police are believed to be looking into possible links between the incident in the supermarket and the discovery of the woman's body.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) sent investigators to the scene on Thursday.

On Friday, it said it had completed its assessment and was satisfied the Kent Police professional standards department could continue the investigation.

IPCC investigators talked to witnesses and officers and checked police logs.

A statement said: "The IPCC has decided this case should be investigated locally. If any further information comes to light during their investigation which causes concern, the case should be referred back to the IPCC."
